5 reasons to check out SubCulture tonight

November 5th, 2016

SubCulture take over both the Colchester Arts Centre and The Waiting Room tonight (Saturday 5th November) for an explosive night of live music and DJ’s spread across both venues. Ahead of the show we asked Paul & Alex from SubCulture for their top five reasons to attend.

1: The Venues…

On November 5th we’ll be utilising two of our favourite spaces in Colchester, in the same night, for the first time. Ticket holders will be welcome to both parties with the first taking place within the historic surroundings of Colchester’s most iconic music venue – The Colchester Arts Centre. Having hosted some of biggest acts in music, comedy and theatre we genuinely view it as one of the towns biggest cultural assets and in terms of hosting high-production shows, there’s nowhere better to host an event.

Straight after we’ll head to the community-driven Waiting Rooms, situated on Queens Street for an after-party. With the recent announcement that the Waiting Rooms will close at the turn of the year, there’s even more reason to come down and celebrate the space with us. Waiting Rooms chief/unsung Colchester hero Marc De’ath gave us the following quote to share:

“The Waiting Room has 11 weeks left in its current guise. It will close it’s doors New Years Eve 2016. It’s great to have all sorts of different social groups make use of the space during that time – continuing our ethos of supporting cultural diversity and what’s unique in Colchester – Subculture and their sterling efforts to bring something new to the town is a perfect match and we look forward to hosting the after party on the 5th.”

2: Foreign Beggars…

Our headliners for the night are UK Hip-Hop crew Foreign Beggars – Although the term Hip-Hop may well tie them down somewhat. In truth they have pushed boundaries within Drum & bass, Dubstep, Trap, Electro and essentially any bass-driven genre you can name. Formed in 2002 and consisting of vocalists Orifice Vulgatron and Metropolis alongside DJ Nonames, the collective are five albums deep, have collaborated on tracks with some of the biggest producers in the world including Noisia, Skrillex, Knife Party, currently have over 50 million youtube plays, a booking schedule that covers most of the globe and even a top-ten track. Their live show has become a trademark and after touring it at festivals and venues worldwide we’re really looking forward to unleashing it on the people of Colchester.

3: Monster Florence…

Rap-collective Monster Florence have made huge strides since we hosted their debut show at the Colchester Free Festival in 2015 and are fast becoming one of our favourite local acts as they have a huge amount of musicianship and talent on board, as well as bags of attitude. We’ve had a sneak preview of their latest video for track ‘Resourceful’, and in terms of production levels it’s amongst the best visuals we’ve seen released by any band from the area. Catch them live before it’s too late – Monster Florence are our top tip to make a significant dent in the music industry in no time…

4: The After-Party Lineup…

It’s very important to us that the after-party doesn’t get overlooked so we’ve tried our hardest to put on a lineup of our favourite local performers that we think people will enjoy. Swing-Bass collective Catjam will kick off proceedings, returning from a busy festival season that has included performances at Boomtown and Nozstock. As any SubCulture party needs an injection of Jungle, we have also asked Borderline Jack (AKA Roachie from the New Town Kings) to put down his guitar for the evening to hit the decks. Finally we have invited Rough Tempo’s Crabby down for a three-deck Drum & Bass selection – The final set of the evening which will get everyone moving late into the night!

5: Colchester…

There are a massive variety of diverse sounds that make up the Colchester music scene and we’re proud to be a part of it. However, we’ve seen a lot of really good parties and brands fold over the last twelve months. November 5th is therefore also a call to arms – It’s of critical importance nightlife continues to exist around Colchester and we are firm believers in doing our best to contribute. Therefore, if it floats your boat, make sure to come out and have a party with us at the Arts Centre & Waiting Rooms on November 5th and help us celebrate the best in underground music, in two of Colchester’s finest spaces.

If you haven’t yet got yours, grab tickets for November 5th directly from the Arts Centre here.
